The Sea Savers

Squeezing 4 days worth of stuff in a carry-on isn't as easy as one might think. I'm off again, this time to travel with 8 kids to Sao Paulo, Brazil for the GIN Conference. I've spent every waking moment (and some dream time) since August 29 thinking about lionfish and coral reefs and we, the Sea Savers, are going to blow everyone away with our project!

It all started in Fronton, remember that post I wrote about Fronton? Well, that was the moment the kids decided that the coral reefs were worth fighting for. And fight we've done.

#1 We now have two lionfish, Sharkie and Spike, living on campus with us. Their mission - to educate people about their destructive behavior in the waters of the Atlantic and Caribbean.

So far we've given "classes" to 240 kids in elementary school and we're scheduling more! You see, lionfish are an invasive species that were introduced into our waters probably through the aquarium trade, and they are loving their predator free life in our waters. They are hungry little suckers and can eat 100 fish a day, even the herbivorous fish that keep our reefs healthy and in balance from algae growth. BUT, guess what? Lionfish are delicious... which brings me to point #2.

#2 We organized and pulled off the first ever Lionfish Festival in the DR. A total of 72 fish were caught and fried up for lunch. This even was such a great success that we are already in planning mode for another!

#3 We have an adopt a coral program. The corals around our island are in danger of sudden death and in order to keep our beautiful beaches supplied with sand, we need the coral reefs, so if you are so inclined, you can purchase a piece of coral and your money will be used to place your tiny baby coral in a coral reef nursery, where it will be protected from divers, boats, fisherman and predators, by a REEF Check staff member. You will get updates on your coral and when it grows up nice and big we will plant your healthy coral into a reef around the DR. Adopt a Coral!

#4 Spread the word. So far the kids have been on TV and in the Newspaper. We have a FB page, so please like our page, eat Lionfish and stay tuned!
