monolingual = :(

I know you moms are busy, and I know you are trying your best, but let me share something... if you are not teaching your kid (or getting someone else to do it) another language besides your native language then you are doing them a  HUGE disservice.

I don't want to get into a political argument, this has NOTHING to do with politics, this has to do with the fact that if your child grows up and wants to explore the world at all and all you've given them is their native language they are going to be at a super disadvantage.

Today I sat in a meeting of 10 people and everyone around me had at least two languages, and could move back and forth between them. I've been living in a non-English speaking country for over 4 years and although I can order some food and get a hotel room, I can not really converse in anything but English. It's pathetic.

I'm not blaming my parents, because they didn't know. They came from a generation where people were frantically trying to give up their cultural background and just become "American", however YOU do know better. YOU do have the information to support your kids. Start now. The younger the better. Buy books/videos in some other language and give your kids the chance to use other sounds besides English sounds.

I know that there are apps out there that will translate for you, but nothing will replace the ability to adequately express yourself in more than one language.

Part of me just wants to give up. My old, tired brain is not opening up to a second language, so maybe I should just move to an English speaking country. Do you realize how that LIMITS me?

Tip #1 for parents from a nonparent = teach your kids a second language
