Pack the baby powder, I'm going camping!

See those big mountains in the middle of the DR? Well, those just happen to be part of the Cordillera Central Range, and the home to the tallest mountains in the entire Caribbean. Pico Duarte at 10,164 feet is the tallest of the tall mountains and my 40th birthday destination.

Actually it's the destination for 28 ninth grade students as well... every year my school tries to organize a 9th grade team building trip for the 80 freshman, and each year it is a struggle to get kids to sign up for 4 showerless days of travel. This year 28 kids plus 5 teachers (including me) are headed up into the mountains. Of the 33 people there are probably 5 that have any experience camping or hiking, so this outta be interesting to say the least. With no experience the kids don't even know where to start asking questions and it wasn't til today that a few thought to ask about where they would take a shower. Hee hee, that's funny, huh? I can only imagine what they are imagining in their heads... showers? In the middle of the mountains in the DR? Right. I wish I had thought to snap a photo of her face as I explained what camping is. I'll have to share my baby powder trick with them tomorrow.

Well happy 40th, LAY (from a former LAY, now LAF!). I'm right behind you on May 30th, but I've been calling myself a "40 year old" for a while since it just seemed like less of a mouthful than "thirty-eight" or "thirty-nine".... We've come a long way since lunch period at Apex Middle, eh?!? I'm glad you're enjoying the DR. I've only been once, to the capital to scout a potential US-AID contract that didn't go through. I did enjoy it, though. Keep up your hard work! Maybe we can try again to get together when Sara comes to town if you're home next summer?? Take care and rock your BIRTHDAY!!
