Connectedly Disconnected

I am a hypocritical blogger. I don't read a single blog on a regular basis. It's not that I don't want to, it's just that there isn't a blog that I've found that I want to read everyday and the blogs I like don't necessarily post everyday, so I get bored and stop looking. I'd like to have a favorite blog... any suggestions?

I try to keep up with the world, but I have to admit, I don't do a good job. What is wrong with people that they want to wake up everyday and read about the horrible things that have happened? Not owning a TV is awesome. I purposefully have to choose what internet page to turn to, so I can really avoid the media tragedy fabrication sensation. When I want to sit down for a bit and detox from work I can turn to my subscribed pages on YouTube and watch SciShow, NatGeo, TED talks and actually support brain activity and possibly enhance my life. I mean, really, what good does it do me to know about the crazy, psycho serial killer that is stalking the woods? I know being informed helps us make good choices, but is there a source that helps us be informed without the sensationalized drama? This may be too much information, but when I do feel out of the loop I often go to Jon Stewart's website and watch a few of the most recent episodes. At least news should be funny, right?

Enter, social media... I've been slow to jump on board, but I am here to say that I love having an account for YouTube where I can just glance to see if my favorite pages have uploaded any new videos. I love Facebook pages. I can like and get updates on any topic that interests me at any time. That is awesome. I've recently discovered Pinterest and although I don't totally get the concept, it is fun and sometimes valuable to peruse through the pages and look for images that stimulate thought. It's also a great place to get new tattoo ideas... And don't get me started on Apps. I just got an IPad for xmas and that things is awesome. I can download a free app, like Flipboard, and customize it to show me only the recent news of topics that I am interested in.

News overload is one of the areas that makes me nervous about moving back to the States for a while. It's easy to come home, turn on the TV and vege, not realizing how destructive those sounds, images, and subliminal messages are to your spirit. With computers, is TV even necessary anymore? I was just thinking that with the IPad, is my computer even necessary?

Let me reassure you that you can tune out the world on any level you want no matter where you are. I live in a small mountain recreational town where almost all conversations center around what bike ride you just did, what local brew you just tried, or when you recently got up to the slopes. Not a single mention of any newsworthy item at all - we continue to stupefy and dismay outsiders with our myopic recreation-centric view of life all the time. Don't be afraid my little friend, life is the one you make:-)
