Recall how I explained the signage and that we are blindly following - shells and arrows... Well, today (day 7) was the first day that the signage was terrible. Leaving Grandas de Salime the shells were spot on leading us.
Starting in Oviedo you read the shell by heading in the direction that the hinge faces. It is counterintuitive to me, but that's the path direction. We hiked up and up into the clouds.
We passed through many little towns today and once again there were no people to be found. We did, however manage to see a town filled with slugs.
We adoringly nicknamed this place, Slugtown. We get a little slap happy along the way.
Spain is divided into different provinces and so far we've been traveling in Asturias, but today we crossed over into Galicia - well marked with a line of rocks on top of a mountain.
Now we've officially entered Galicia and our first order of business was to find out that the shell direction is backwards here. What?!? You can't just change how you read the shell and not tell anyone. Luckily, MJ's Uncle gave us a detailed packet and after checking, we realized that, indeed, the shell direction has changed.
In Galicia, the skies cleared, and the rolling hills of this regions came into focus.
Today was a long day - 31 km, almost 20 miles. We limped into the town of Fonsegrada and thankfully found our reserved room, and headed for a typical late lunch. After, we stopped by the church and the doors weren't exactly open, but they were unlocked, so I let us in.
Our cute little room overlooks the church bell tower. Now we do some laundry, and rest before our late dinner.
