Hump Day

Our cumulative walking total...

99.4 miles! (160 km)

We left Berducedo and after a long hike up and a long hike down we made it to the cute little valley town of Grandas de Salime. Much like every little town we've passed through or stayed in, the town is more than just sleepy, it's hibernating.

I've had some surprises in the past 6 days, and one is how empty every town feels. Even with cars parked out front, you barely encounter anyone at all. The more questionable emptiness is the churches. In every little town since we left Oviedo, we have yet to find a church that is actually open.

These gorgeous historic churches are all locked up. We've been so grateful walking that we keep saying that at the next church we are going to stop and say some Hail Marys, and church after church is closed, so this morning, after a super steep incline, we reach a "town" with one empty house and one tiny church and here we gave thanks at the locked door.

MJ's Tia has been calling ahead to our next stop and reserving rooms for us. THANK YOU! This is super helpful for walking with a calm brain. We can enjoy the scenery, focus on the path, and arrive with confidence that we have a bed.

Speaking of path, although we have maps, we are literally blindly following the markers of the Camino. There are two main symbols that guide us, one is the shell,

and the other is an arrow.

Grandas de Salime has a church in the center of town, and guess what, it's closed.

There is an information sign on the front door, and I'm not sure, but I think a bit was lost in google translate...

On this 6th day, not only have we overcome our hiking hump, but I've become Spanish with my afternoon cafecito.

Vale.
